COMPLETION PROJECT: A FILM BY JONAS MEKAS
Leading up to its 50th anniversary in 2020, Anthology Film Archives is undertaking a capital campaign to restore, upgrade, expand — and complete — its century-old East Village courthouse building to better meet the needs of the film-going public, visiting students and scholars, and its expanding collections and programs.
LIBRARY:
The addition of a public library on the fourth floor will make available for the first time one of the most important collections of paper materials related to independent cinema. Items include books, journals, correspondence, film stills, and production documents such as Orson Welles’s shooting script for Citizen Kane. Additional collections of paper materials include those of Harry Smith, Maya Deren, Jonas Mekas, Joseph Cornell, and Kenneth Anger, among others.
HEAVEN AND EARTH CAFÉ:
A street-level café for pre- and post-film conversations will generate revenue to help offset Anthology’s annual operating costs.
SKYROOM ROOFTOP TERRACE:
A rooftop terrace for special events and performances will expand public programming opportunities and generate revenue to help offset operating costs.
INTERIOR RENOVATION:
A complete interior renovation will improve public areas, gallery space, and research facilities, expanding public programming opportunities and improving accessibility.
UPGRADES:
A new elevator will make the entire building ADA accessible. New film vaults and a complete upgrade of mechanical equipment will improve building circulation and environmental management for optimal film preservation conditions.
RESTORATION:
Exterior architectural details of Anthology’s historic courthouse building will be restored.
